Summary of the methods, procedures, materials and techniques that will be used in the professional development provided.
Curriculum is based on Harvard University Professor Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, which explains eight ways in which people process information. YogaKids uses yoga as a pathway for learning. It emphasizes the body/kinesthetic intelligence - or the intelligence that processes information through movement. Teachers will be given sample lesson plans that focus on different poses and how to use these poses to teach various subjects, such as math and language arts, for example, "Down Diggety Dog" pose can be used to teach math by having students analyze the pose to find geometric patterns, such as a triangle, parallel lines and even right, obtuse or accute angels. Our goal is not to turn teachers into yoga instructors, but to inspire teachers to use yoga to get their lessons across to students who are enamored with things like computer games, DVDs and such.

This optional assessment gives teachers and adminstrators data to report to school leadership, boards and parent-teacher organizaitons to demonstrate the value of their investment. Leading academics at Purdue have also evaluated and approved YogaKids Tools for Schools as a continuing education course for teachers. What is YogaKids Tools for Schools?
YogaKids International, the premier yoga program for children, has developed the Tools for Schools program to bring the age-old practice of yoga into the modern-day classroom. The YogaKids Tools for Schools program allows K-5 students to encounter yoga and its many benefits in a fun, engaging, and developmentally appropriate manner. The program successfully integrates across all K-5 curricula, and does not require either you or your students to have any background in yoga.
YogaKids Tools for Schools is a comprehensive program using yoga, Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Theory, curriculum integration techniques and character education to accomplish its mission.
  • Yoga: Students will practice breathing techniques, poses, games, activities, relaxation, and visualization.
  • Multiple Intelligences Theory: The program allows all students to flourish by honoring their individual learning styles.
  • Curriculum Integration: All basic curriculum areas are addressed, as well as classroom management, test preparation, fitness, and environmental and multicultural education.
  • Character Education: Yoga is traditionally associated with the development of positive traits such as confidence, compassion, respect, tolerance, patience, and nonviolence. The YogaKids Tools for Schools program brings the character education aspects of yoga into the foreground.
